What is Entertaiment?

Entertaiment is an activity that is designed to provide enjoyment, diversion or amusement. It can take many forms and may be shared with others or viewed in isolation. Examples of entertainment include games, sports, art and music. Entertainment may be used as a tool to relieve stress, build self-confidence or improve communication skills. It can also have a serious purpose as with ceremonies, festivals or satire.

Entertainment is derived from the Latin intertenere, meaning “to hold inside.” The word entertain has long been associated with amusement, but can also have a more serious tone as in ceremonial occasions or religious festivals. It can be presented in any number of media, from an orchestral performance to a movie or innovative video game. The story of Scheherazade, for example, has been told as an opera, a book and a movie.
