What is Entertainment?

The Fall 2011 issue of T E News began with the question: “What is Entertainment?” The topic was complex and a challenge to cover, since the word entertainment itself has become synonymous with amusement, although many types of entertainment are not intended for amusement. The word entertain has its origin in the medieval Latin word intertenere, a compound of the prefix inter meaning inside and the suffix tenere or ten, meaning to hold.

Today, entertainment has evolved into an art form with the ability to be adapted to virtually any scale of occasion: from the intimate experience between two people at a private party to a global audience watching a film or listening to a concert.
