Entertaiment is a broad term that can be applied to many different activities. It can be a private selection of pre-recorded entertainment for an individual; it can be a meal adapted to any number of guests; it can involve music and dance, or even a performance intended for thousands. Entertaiment is often associated with amusement, but it may also serve serious purposes such as ceremony, celebration, religious festival, or satire. It can even transform from one form to another, as when a work of art becomes popular and spawns new variations. The word derives from the Medieval Latin inter tenere, from the root ten, meaning to hold inside.
